If you plan to leave UW-Madison while your study is ongoing, please contact the IRB office overseeing your research to discuss the transfer or closure of your study prior to your departure.

A Change of Protocol will be required to reflect the departure. Include whether the study will remain open at the UW, will be opened at another institution, or will be closed entirely.

  • If the study will remain open at the UW, delegate another UW-Madison investigator to assume principal investigator responsibilities. See Changes in Principal Investigator. Departing investigators may retain a 0% appointment and remain as PI on a study for up to one year when the study is a graduate student project. See PI Status for UW-Madison Studies Involving Human Subjects.
  • If the study is non-exempt and federally funded, will remain open at UW-Madison, and will be opened at a new institution, you must contact the HRPP Reliant and Navigation Team (RELIANT): irbreliance@wisc.edu.

If data, images and/or specimens will be transferred to the new institution, this will need to be described in the Change of Protocol. See Changes to Permit Data/Specimen/Image Sharing for more information.
