Unless the study qualifies for study closure at the time it expires, investigators must submit a continuing review application in order to secure a new approval period. Complete a continuing review application by selecting the “Continuing Review” option in the study workspace.

Research teams are responsible for monitoring when IRB approval of their studies expires, but will receive automated reminders from ARROW at 75, 60, and 30 days before a study expires.

To allow the IRB sufficient time to review and re-approve a study prior to the expiration date, please follow the required submission timelines for continuing reviews noted below.

  • For studies that were submitted and approved as initial reviews through ARROW, the continuing review protocol progress report needs to be provided to the IRB 45 days prior to the study’s expiration date to ensure sufficient time for processing.
  • No changes can be made as part of continuing review application, but changes can be submitted separately and concurrently via a change application.
  • If you do not submit a continuing review application and receive approval prior to the expiration date listed on your approval letter, you must cease all study activities until the continuing review is approved (except for those related to ensuring participant safety).
