Investigators new to UW-Madison
New hires may begin preparing to submit applications to the UW-Madison IRBs once they have a UW Net ID. Preparatory activities include completing required training for researchers; learning about IRB policies, procedures, and review process from the Toolkit Library on the irb.wisc.edu website; and consulting the Reliance and Navigation Team (RELIANT) about IRB oversight requirements for studies being transferred to UW-Madison or continuing at the researcher’s prior institution. It’s also possible to prepare IRB applications for human research in our online application system, ARROW; however, ARROW applications should not be submitted to the IRB until the new hire’s appointment officially begins.
Investigator responsibilities when leaving UW-Madison
If you plan to leave UW-Madison while your study is ongoing, please contact the IRB office or RELIANT to discuss the transfer or closure of your study prior to your departure. You can have another UW-Madison investigator assume principal investigator responsibilities, you can transfer the study and data to another institution, or you can close the study entirely. If the study will continue, RELIANT will advise you regarding the next steps for IRB coverage. To transfer the research data and specimens to the new location you will need to have a data transfer and use agreement (DTUA) and/or materials transfer agreement (MTA) in place. For UW-Madison policy on transferring data to another institution, see Data Stewardship, Access, and Retention. If you plan to continue your study or using transferred data, you should also contact the IRB office at your new institution for guidance on how to proceed.
